Holes, Tears and Missing Sections

A hole or tear can continue to enlarge when the surrounding foundation is left unsupported. Depending on the rug’s construction and condition, we can stabilise the area, reconstruct the foundation and reweave the missing design.

The replacement knots, pile direction, colours and pattern are carefully matched to the original rug wherever possible.

Worn-Pile Restoration

Areas exposed to regular foot traffic can lose their pile over time, leaving the foundation visible. Our specialists can rebuild and re-pile worn sections using carefully selected materials.

This work can improve both the rug’s appearance and its structural protection.

Fringe Restoration

The visible fringe is formed from the rug’s foundation and helps support the knots at each end. Loose, missing or damaged fringes can therefore develop into more substantial damage if they are ignored.

Edge and Selvedge Repair

Moth larvae can consume wool pile and damage areas that are hidden beneath furniture or rarely disturbed.

Burn and Fire Damage

Burns can affect the pile, foundation and surrounding fibres. Small burn marks may require localised repair, while deeper damage may need the affected area to be reconstructed and rewoven.

Water can cause colour movement, distortion, mould, odour and weakening of a rug’s foundation. We assess the extent of the damage before recommending cleaning, colour correction, reshaping or structural restoration.

Pet Damage

Pet chewing, scratching and staining can damage fringes, edges and the body of a rug. We can assess both the visible damage and any weakening beneath the pile.

Curling Edges and Corners

Corners and edges can curl because of tension, wear or changes to the rug’s structure. Where appropriate, corrective strips or other specialist methods can be used to help the rug lie more evenly.

Rug Resizing and Alteration

Where a severely damaged section cannot reasonably be rebuilt, resizing may offer an alternative. The rug can be carefully reduced and its edges reconstructed to create a sound and usable piece.

Resizing is only recommended after considering the rug’s design, construction, age and likely value.
