Chinese Rug Restoration and Repair Specialists

Chinese rugs are valued for their distinctive designs, detailed craftsmanship and cultural history. When a rug becomes worn, torn or damaged, specialist restoration can help preserve its appearance, structure and character for years to come.

Pars Rug Gallery provides professional Chinese rug restoration and repair for antique, vintage and contemporary rugs. From securing frayed edges to rebuilding missing sections, every rug is individually inspected before an appropriate restoration plan is recommended.

Our specialists restore Chinese wool, silk and mixed-fibre rugs at our dedicated workshop, with collection and return available throughout the UK.

With Hungerford’s strong reputation for antiques and period furnishings, many homes feature rugs that carry both decorative and historical value. Whether placed in a listed property or a modern home, rugs can suffer from gradual deterioration caused by use, environmental conditions, or the natural ageing process. Our restoration service focuses on stabilising these issues with care, ensuring each rug retains its identity while becoming structurally sound again.

Specialist Restoration for Chinese Rugs

Chinese rugs differ considerably in age, construction, materials and condition. An antique Peking rug may require a different restoration approach from a modern Chinese silk rug or a thick-pile Chinese Art Deco carpet.

Before recommending any work, our specialists examine:

  • The rug’s weave and construction
  • Wool, silk, cotton and foundation fibres
  • The stability of the surrounding areas
  • The extent and likely cause of the damage
  • Previous repairs or alterations
  • The condition of the fringes and edges
  • Areas of missing or worn pile
  • Moth, water, fire or pet damage
  • The colours, pattern and materials needed for repair

We then provide a clear, no-obligation quotation explaining the recommended work.

We restore a wide range of rugs for clients in Hungerford, including Persian rugs, oriental rugs, antique carpets, vintage pieces, and contemporary designs. Each restoration project is carried out with attention to both detail and durability, ensuring that the rug is not only visually improved but also reinforced for continued use.

All restoration work is guided by the experience of Arash, whose knowledge of traditional rug-making techniques ensures that every repair respects the integrity of the original piece.

Chinese Rug Repairs We Undertake

Our workshop can carry out minor preventative repairs as well as detailed restoration of more extensively damaged Chinese rugs.

Holes, Tears and Missing Sections

A hole or tear can continue to enlarge when the surrounding foundation is left unsupported. Depending on the rug’s construction and condition, we can stabilise the area, reconstruct the foundation and reweave the missing design.

The replacement knots, pile direction, colours and pattern are carefully matched to the original rug wherever possible.

Worn-Pile Restoration

Areas exposed to regular foot traffic can lose their pile over time, leaving the foundation visible. Our specialists can rebuild and re-pile worn sections using carefully selected materials.

This work can improve both the rug’s appearance and its structural protection.

Fringe Restoration

The visible fringe is formed from the rug’s foundation and helps support the knots at each end. Loose, missing or damaged fringes can therefore develop into more substantial damage if they are ignored.

Our Chinese rug fringe repair service can include:

  • Securing loose ends
  • Rebuilding damaged end sections
  • Replacing missing fringe
  • Adding or repairing protective stoppers
  • Preventing further unravelling

Edge and Selvedge Repair

The side edges of a rug are vulnerable to wear, vacuum damage and repeated foot traffic. We can reinforce, rebuild or rebind damaged edges using materials selected to complement the original construction.

Moth-Damage Restoration

Moth larvae can consume wool pile and damage areas that are hidden beneath furniture or rarely disturbed.

Our service can include:

  • Assessing the extent of moth damage
  • Treating active moth infestation
  • Stabilising weakened areas
  • Reconstructing damaged foundations
  • Re-piling missing sections
  • Applying preventative anti-moth treatment

Burn and Fire Damage

Burns can affect the pile, foundation and surrounding fibres. Small burn marks may require localised repair, while deeper damage may need the affected area to be reconstructed and rewoven.

Water and Flood Damage

Water can cause colour movement, distortion, mould, odour and weakening of a rug’s foundation. We assess the extent of the damage before recommending cleaning, colour correction, reshaping or structural restoration.

Pet Damage

Pet chewing, scratching and staining can damage fringes, edges and the body of a rug. We can assess both the visible damage and any weakening beneath the pile.

Curling Edges and Corners

Corners and edges can curl because of tension, wear or changes to the rug’s structure. Where appropriate, corrective strips or other specialist methods can be used to help the rug lie more evenly.

Rug Resizing and Alteration

Where a severely damaged section cannot reasonably be rebuilt, resizing may offer an alternative. The rug can be carefully reduced and its edges reconstructed to create a sound and usable piece.

Resizing is only recommended after considering the rug’s design, construction, age and likely value.

Restoration provides a practical solution, allowing these rugs to be preserved rather than discarded. It also supports sustainability by extending the life of textiles that still hold both aesthetic and functional value.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Client Testimonials & Success Stories with Our Premium Rugs

We have a beautiful Afghan

We have a beautiful Afghan, silk rug that after 30+ years was showing wear across the end fringing. From my first engagement with the Pars Rug Gallery team I could not have been happier. I received an accurate assessment, professional clean and excellent repair – at, what I regard to be, a very fair price. I was kept appraised throughout of the progress of the work. My much loved rug now looks fantastic – thank you to the Pars Rug Gallery team.

From start to finish it was very easy

From start to finish it was very easy to work with the company. I have a large 12ftx 9ft rug that needed a very deep clean and moth treatment. It was recommended to also have some mending done which I hadn’t thought of and WOW! What an amazing repair job!!!! Incredible!!!! I am 110% satisfied with the service and price and look forward to enjoying my rug for many years!

Excellent restoration

From first contacting Pars Rug Gallery to seeing photos of the work in progress and then the final result, it has been a wonderful experience. When Arash came to see our family’s old Persian rug, it was in a sorry state with badly worn patches and edges missing. He was able to tell us all about it and explain in detail the work that could be done to restore it. After 5 months, the work has been completed and I am delighted with the result. The rug is beautiful with the true workmanship and colours now revealed.
